"Not interested" / "I'm busy"

The situation

Often in the first five seconds, before you've said anything. This scenario tests emotional control more than technique.

What it actually means

New reps hear "the call is over." Experienced reps hear "you haven't given me a reason to be interested yet." Usually it's reflex, not a decision.

How it sounds

Customer

I'm not interested.

SDR

Totally understand. Before I let you go — quick question: are you offering financing to your customers today?

[ Then LISTEN. ]

Customer

I'm busy, I'm on a job site.

SDR

Absolutely, I'll keep it quick. Are you offering financing today, or should I catch you at a better time?

The distinction that matters

Persistence is ONE thoughtful attempt to reopen. Annoyance is ignoring "no" five times. Never acceptable.

Never
  • Argue.
  • Repeat the pitch louder.
  • Ask "why not?"
  • Keep pitching someone standing on a roof.
  • If they say "take me off your list" — the call ends immediately, politely, and the number is logged do-not-call the same day, permanently.

Read the tone before you decide

ANeutral — flat decline, screening on autopilot

Your best odds. Make the one attempt.

BRushed — said fast, distracted, background noise

Don't push the question, trade it for a time: "Should I catch you at a better moment?"

CIrritated — sharp tone, they've had three of these calls today

One short low-pressure line, then let it go gracefully. Burning the number costs more than the call.
